Lost in thought, I wandered down the garden path until a figure emerged from the shadows ahead. I gasped, narrowly avoiding collision with the man’s wiry frame.

He stood a head taller than me, all sharp angles and edges. Stringy black hair hung to his shoulders, framing an angular face. His feeble attempt at a beard did little to offset a receding chin and washed-out complexion that screamed lack of sunlight.

Victor De Luca smiled at me.

A chill slithered down my spine as I gazed up at this ominous stranger. In an instant, every instinct suddenly screamed at me to turn heel and flee that grinning facade hinting at the menace beneath.

“Oh, excuse me,” I said, attempting to sidestep him.

Vincent held up his hands. “No trouble. My fault. I should’ve been watching where I was going.” His gaze traveled the length of me slowly, and then he smiled even more widely. “I know you. You’re the town psychic, the one that worked with Connie’s cousin Emma.” Every forced, hollow smile and exaggerated laugh felt calculated to set me at ease and hide his sharp, restless scrutiny. He raised his eyebrow. “You in a hurry?”

“I am both that psychic and in a hurry. You’re the DJ, right? Nice to meet you. Anyway, if you’ll excuse me, I was just heading to my room.” I forced a polite smile, keenly aware we were alone on this secluded path and looked pointedly at the path behind him. My fingers tightened around the strap of my bag, senses on high alert.

“I’m a radio talk show host, not a DJ,” Vincent said, ignoring my desire to leave. He cocked his head and stared at me with an intensity that set my teeth on edge. “I couldn’t help overhearing... were you arguing with a bird a moment ago?”

I let out a strained laugh. “Arguing with a bird? Actually, come to think of it, I could make big money on the internet filming arguments with birds. All the rage these days, right? I love those blue chicken videos. Anyway, if you’ll excuse me—”

“Interesting.” His eyes narrowed a fraction. “You didn’t answer my question.”

You’d think after encouraging Lothian to fake a whirlwind wedding weekend romance with the sloppy lush Beatrice, I’d be eager to use Victor’s more than obvious interest in me to get the intel I needed.

You’d think.

But you’d be wrong.

Every alarm in my head was clanging just being near Victor. Something was way, way off about this guy—my instincts were screaming that I needed to be anywhere else right now except alone with him on this isolated path.

“No, I didn’t answer your question.” The smile slid from my face. “It’s not really any of your business who I was talking to, though, is it? For the last time, I’d like to leave and get back to my room. Have a good afternoon.”

I moved to sidestep around him, but Vincent swayed into my path. Though he uttered not a word, his intent rang loud in the space between us, the amused grin remaining plastered on his face.
